How one officer's heart for ministry created an unforgettable blessing for student athletes

Gospel Imperative
When believers in different spheres of influence come together with a shared heart for service, God's presence shines through their efforts in powerful ways. The collaboration between faith organizations and community servants creates opportunities to demonstrate Christ's love in action, reaching hearts that might otherwise remain untouched.
"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up." - Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
In a world where law enforcement and community relationships often make headlines for the wrong reasons, something beautiful happened recently at Stevens High School that deserves our attention. Through a divine connection at Unite San Antonio—a bi-weekly networking event for ministry leaders—I discovered a unique partnership opportunity that would bless student athletes in ways no one expected.
Officer Green, a man of faith serving with the San Antonio Police Department, introduced me to their "Police, Prayer, and Popsicle" ministry. This innovative outreach combines community policing with spiritual encouragement, creating bridges between officers and the communities they serve. What started as a simple conversation at a ministry luncheon blossomed into a special Fellowship of Christian Athletes celebration that would impact multiple Stevens High School sports teams.
The event itself was beautifully simple yet profoundly meaningful. Officers arrived with their popsicle truck, serving ice cream treats while Officer Green shared a heartfelt devotional with student athletes. The combination of prayer, fellowship, and frozen treats created an atmosphere where hearts were opened and God's presence was unmistakably felt. Students who might typically view police officers with skepticism or indifference instead experienced them as caring servants with genuine hearts for ministry.
This collaboration exemplifies why supporting organizations like the Fellowship of Christian Athletes is so deeply important. FCA doesn't just reach student athletes during scheduled meetings or events—it creates platforms for unexpected partnerships that multiply ministry impact. When Officer Green and I connected, it wasn't just two individuals meeting; it was two kingdom-minded servants discovering how their unique callings could complement each other for greater gospel advancement.
Officer Green's ministry extends beyond these school visits. Monthly, he leads devotionals and prayer sessions atop the San Antonio police station, interceding for the entire city. This dedication to spiritual leadership within law enforcement creates opportunities for FCA to bridge gaps between different community sectors, demonstrating that faith transcends professional boundaries.
The ripple effects of such partnerships are immeasurable. Students see that faith isn't confined to church buildings or youth group meetings—it's alive in their schools, their communities, and even in their local police department. They witness adults from different backgrounds united by a common purpose: sharing Christ's love and serving others selflessly.
This is why FCA's mission remains so vital. Through relationships and authentic connections, barriers break down, stereotypes dissolve, and hearts open to gospel truth in the most unexpected places.
